One of the highlights of our trip to Nova Scotia was the whale-watching cruise we took off of Brier Island at Digby Neck. We were so fortunate that day because the weather was clear and the seas were very calm; we were told that was unusual. In fact, the very next day the cruise company cancelled due to high winds and rain.
Our cruise was full so it was a challenge to get positioned to find an unobstructed view of where the whales were surfacing. I used my Olympus M. Zuiko 150-300mm zoom lens, which gives an equivalent reach of 600mm. Very few shots are cropped.
It was so much fun and awe-inspiring to watch these amazing mammals as they surfaced, spouted through their blow holes, and then dove with their gigantic tails in full display. I was lucky to get some closeups of the heads and the tails. Unfortunately, none of the whales did a full breach during our cruise.
A few of these photos are composites in an attempt to capture the grandeur and spirit of what we saw. As with all my composites, these were taken on the same day and at approximately the same time of day. Click on each photo to see an enlarged view.
