While celebrating our first grandson’s sixth birthday last week, I was remembering making his baby quilt. “Ilya’s Aviary” was one of the last projects that I quilted by hand. It has six birdhouses that form the bases of rainbow braids, and the door to each house snaps open to reveal an appliqued bird and a little text. Lots of fun to make.
My first grandchild’s quilt was “Katya’s Animal Crackers,” finished in 2016. Her trip-around-the-world design was filled with a variety of appliqued creatures from the sea, land and sky. The sueded cotton squares were sandwiched and backed with flannel squares, all sewn together with frayed-edge seams on the back. My first time joining a quilt with this technique–and it will be the last!
