Quilts for Grandchildren: Part 1

Child's quilt, jigsaw puzzle, hand and machine pieced, machine quilted

The women in my family have always made quilts. The oldest one in my collection is a hand-quilted white-on-white coverlet made by a great aunt around 1939. The newest one is the quilt that I gave to our youngest grandchild just last week.

The jigsaw pattern for “Daniel’s Puzzle” was fun to construct. After I laid out the squares I had to reverse applique each “knobby” into the matching neighboring block. The print of autumn leaves used in the border and fussy-cut applique was something I had on hand for a while and really wanted to use, even though Daniel was born in the middle of the Minnesota winter.

Daniel’s project follows the second-newest Spingarn quilt, “Good Morning, Good Night,” made for our grandson Nicholas two years ago. The sunrise scene is made up of clamshells hand-appliqued onto a muslin foundation, along with a Dresden plate sun. The back of the quilt changes to a smiling crescent moon for bedtime.

Still more grandchildren quilts to come in a later post!
