Bunnies and Bees

Child's quilt, bunny quilt, rabbit applique, hand applique bunnies and butterflies, zig-zag quiltl, Project Linus quilt, Spingarn quilts

Spring has arrived in our backyard, with the bees madly working the rosemary flowers and a mourning dove raising her nestlings right in the Argentine giant cactus. There is also a little rabbit hanging out under the pampas grass, so I thought bunnies were appropriate for a Linus quilt in April.

“Bunny Hop” used up five teal and gold remnants from previous Linus quilts and my own stash. The inspiration to applique my bunnies onto a zig-zag background comes from the “Animal Parade” series of children’s quilts by Cheri Leffler.

There are also bunnies in April’s “Garden Twist” quilt, hidden in the print along with flowers, leaves, geese, and foxes. This quilt is adapted from the Jackie Robinson’s “Garden City” pattern for Benartex.

I must have been welcoming the bees in April of last year too, because that is when I made “Busy Bees.” I’d found a three-fabric pack at a Linus meeting with bee and leaf fabrics, and I made the hives from my box of leftover 2-1/2″ strips. There are a lot of little embroidered iron-on bees flying around the quilt, which I sewed on for added durability.  Click on an image below for an expanded view.
