About Us

Thank you for visiting Spingarn Studio, a gallery of photography and fiber arts by Richard and Penny Spingarn. We love learning new skills and developing our artistic interests.  The photos and quilts shown in these galleries draw from our seven years living in Costa Rica, summers in the northern midwest and northeastern US, and life in the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico where we now live.

Richard’s nature photography explores a number of genres, from macro to landscape. Much of his work is of birds and flowers. But southwestern and northern landscapes are a close runner-up. Richard uses micro four-thirds Olympus/OM System cameras and lenses. The combination of small and lightweight gear and advanced technology are are well suited to his subjects and style.

Penny has been sewing since she was about ten and has almost always had some thread or yarn in her hands, whether she was making clothes or spinning and felting wool from her sheep. But her passion is quilting. Most of her quilts have gone on to new homes with family and friends and the organizations served by Project Linus. Her favorite projects have been preserved here in Richard’s photographs.
